The demolition derby has always been one of the favorite events at the Navan Fair, and this year promises to be no different. To participate in this event you need to be just a little bit crazy, perhaps even have a screw loose. Lets face it, you are facing off against a bunch of guys that want to ram you into next week.

I was curious as to what made demolition derby drivers tick so I sought out rookie competitor Justin “The Mad Man” Birch for his thoughts on this years derby. Justin struck me as a nice lad, but I’m quite sure that the elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top floor. You see, Justin has decided to paint his car in honor of his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. He may as well have painted a target on his back. Justin has made it very clear that he isn’t a fan of Ottawa Senator supporters either, referring to them as “cocky.” Justin is a brave soul indeed.

Lets take a look at what Justin had to say shall we?

Needless to say I think that whatever happens it is going to be a great show. Come see Justin “The Mad Man” Birch on Thursday August 12th at 7:00pm. Right afterward, there will be a mechanical bull riding contest under the domes with live entertainment!

Come out and challenge your friends to see who is the best cowboy or cowgirl! Word has it that Jed has a padded head and horns so you don’t get gored, but he is an ornery old bull that wants nothing more than to buck you off.! Come out and enjoy live music by Yesterday’s Tomorrow while taking a wild ride on Jed.

Yesterday’s Tomorrow

Yesterday’s Tomorrow has been on the music scene for over 12 years. Initially called GlibX, the three piece band is made up of singer/drummer Rob Lachance, guitarist Kevin Savoy and bassist Glen Pilon. The trio has evolved into a tight rock band that covers music from a wide variety of artists. Along with some original material, the group mostly performs well known songs, occasionally adding new twists to the mix that will most certainly get you moving. Performing music from a wide array of artists, the trio pride themselves on providing depth to their songs as well as offering a variety of music that dates from the 60’s right up to some of today’s up and coming musicians.

As the Navan Fair celebrates its 65th birthday, the iconic Canadian band celebrates its 35th year. This promises to be an incredible show.

*Age of majority required

About the band

It goes like this: millions of records, a couple dozen hits, sold-out coliseums across Canada, a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy) for Band of the Year. The Vancouver Sun called them “Canadian rock heroes of the first order … the best performing band in Canada.”

The great reviews continue. In 2009, Peter Assaff of The Northern Light hailed Ra McGuire and Brian Smith as “the Canadian version of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards” and Joel Rubinoff of The Record wrote, ” … this frolicking, rollicking showcase for McGuire’s soaring pop melodies and whimsical wordplay is arguably one of the biggest Canadian bands of all time.”

Then as now, what makes Trooper what they are is great performances and great pop songwriting.

“We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)”, “Raise a Little Hell”, “The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar”, “Two For the Show”, “Pretty Lady” “Good Ol’ General Hand Grenade”, “Round, Round We Go”, “Santa Maria”, “Janine” – a few of the Trooper hits that, according to writer Ryan Sparks, “have weaved their way into the fabric of this country like no other bands have been able to do. Tune into any radio station from Vancouver to St John’s and you’re bound to encounter one of their dozen hit radio anthems that are still featured in heavy rotation to this day.”

Trooper’s ten studio albums have earned multiple gold and platinum awards and their 6 X Platinum greatest hits album, Hot Shots, remains one of Universal Music Canada’s best selling catalog CDs and one of the country’s most enduring party soundtracks.

Dan Brisbois of canadianbands.com writes, “They’ve won practically every Canadian music award possible and they’ve been dubbed ‘Canada’s Greatest Party Band’ … and rightfully so.” In 2009 Bob Mersereau, author of The Top 100 Canadian Albums wrote, “Since it came out in 1979, Trooper’s Hot Shots has been one of the biggest-selling albums in Canadian music history. It has gone six times platinum, and sells consistently, as do tickets to Trooper gigs. There are clubs and festivals across the country where the annual Trooper show is practically an official holiday.” Indeed, Trooper continues to dependably sell out shows across the country – often performing for three generations of fans – demonstrating that the band and its music remain timeless.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Trooper has become a Canadian legend. They continue to perform their huge collection of hits with the vitality and sense of humor that has served them well on their steady march through the hills and valleys of Canadian Rock and Roll.

Trooper on Facebook

Opening act Epyllion

Epyllion is an alternative rock band (for lack of a better genre) heralding from Ottawa, Canada – and are set on taking a tired genre and re-invigorating it from a new perspective.

The vehicle that Epyllion is using to give the spark of music a new flame is their first studio album ‘Chance Encounters’. The album, while not their first release (two previous albums exist in the digital realm), is their first proper studio album, and is being released physically as well – for those who still have the joy of owning their favourite bands CD.

Eric St-Cyr, Hitsman and Ryan Cahill first formed the band in early 2008, after their 9 member progressive rock group ‘The Conservatory For The Regression of Sound’ fell apart. Chris Zimmerman on drums was soon added, and Eric’s brother Jay St-Cyr joined in on keyboards, guitars, and whatever else he could muster. “We don’t make music with the plans on touring stadiums, we’re very realistic” explains front man Eric St-Cyr. “We enjoy our music too much to be able to think even past playing it for the joy of playing it. It is, however, fun to see other people enjoy it as much as we do”.

The songs on their first studio album ‘Chance Encouters’ summarizes the bands influences from over the past 50 years and puts them into context. Eric St-Cyr “Hopefully everybody else gets as much out of the album as we do – it would be an honour for us to be relatable to complete strangers”.

About the band

Harlequin was originally formed in the mid-seventies. After several demos and trips to Toronto, Harlequin was finally discovered playing in a tiny bar in Toronto by representatives of Jack Douglas, legendary producer of Aerosmith, Patti Smith and John Lennon. Ironically, the scouts for Douglas’ company had actually intended to see Goddo, the band playing downstairs, but were turned away due to a sold old show. Instead they retired upstairs to a much smaller bar – only to be blown away by the band, playing a high-energy set of strong original songs for only a handful of people. This chance meeting led to a production deal with Douglas.

With Douglas’ help, Harlequin signed a deal with CBS/Epic (home to Cheap Trick and Eddie Money) in 1979. The band proceeded to amaze everyone at the label by pushing the first release “Victim of a Song”(1979) to gold status through sheer hard-work, incessant touring, word of mouth and solid song-writing. Songs like Sweet Things in Life, You are the Light and Survive introduced the band to radio to many markets in Canada – especially Western Canada.

The second release, Love Crimes (1980), came with a bigger push from the label, and went on to go Platinum, powered in part by Harlequin’s biggest hit to date ‘Innocence.” Another track, “Thinking of You” became a staple of rock radio, and a highlight of the live show.

One False Move (1982) cemented the band’s radio success with tunes like “I Did it for Love,” “Superstitious Feeling” and “Heart Gone Cold.” The fourth and final album, eponymously titled, featured a change of direction as well as producer – Alfie Agius, former bassist with The Fixx, replaced Jack Douglas. This album produced one single “Take this Heart” and the band’s only video, filmed at the abandoned Don jail in Toronto by Juno-winning Champagne Productions.

Harlequin was and still remains, something of a work-horse of the Canadian road, soldiering through multiple grueling Cross-Canada tours, and working with such bands as Triumph, Streetheart, Nazareth, Heart, April Wine, Pat Benatar and Saga. Saga took the band to Puerto Rico, where they discovered – to their shock and amazement, that Innocence had been a huge hit single. To capitalize on the song’s success, the band played in Caracas Venezuela, headlining two nights at the city’s biggest arena. With Triumph the band toured through the States and made some headway in the mid-west and Texas.

The next album was the Radio Romances greatest hits package, which also featured a new tune (written by Tom Cochrane) entitled “No Mystery” .

The current line-up of the band released “Waking the Jester” in 2007. It had two singles which touched every continent of the world, “Shine On” and “Rise”.

2009 the band released “On/Q” the first live compilation. Original singer, George Belanger is proud to release the songs in the style and intent in which they were written and which he had always preferred. Songs representing the band from inception to 2009 are included.

Unlike many bands of their era, Harlequin is still a staple of rock radio in Canada, where the band’s old and new hits still receive remarkable amounts of airplay. Fueled by this continued success at radio, the band still tours, gaining new fans all the time, and attracting anyone who loves Canadian rock at it’s finest.

The bands current line-up consists of George Belanger, Nik Rivers, Derrick Gottfried, Darren Moore and AJ Chabidon.

Opening Act Sterling

Sterling is a four man Ottawa based group that captures the essence of classic rock, while injecting their own modern tones to create a familiar, yet heavy rock sound. Sterling encompasses a diverse group of experienced musicians, but officially formed together as a band in early 2009. Sterling continues to cover everything from Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR) to Green Day, maintaining a diverse set list which will appeal to crowds of all ages and musical tastes. Look for Sterling to bring the foundation of classic rock back to life!

Prairie Oyster

You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone. Those words from another Canadian musical great certainly ring true for the fans of Prairie Oyster who were eager for a new album from their honky-tonk heroes. Thing is – the band never went away, but the gap between their records has shown how invaluable their contribution to Canadian roots music has been.

Now, the wait is over. Prairie Oyster is back and their new album, One Kiss, finds them at the very peak of their form. With more than 30 years under their well-worn belt, the band has amassed twelve new songs that is arguably their best work of their illustrious career.

Their eighth record (and OpenRoad debut), One Kiss, is the sound of life-long friends getting together to make music for all the right reasons. It’s relaxed, intimate and as comfortable as your favourite woolen sweater – mirroring the creative environment established by the group. This is the first fully self-produced Prairie Oyster album and they clearly thrived on this challenge.

The project came together at Audio Valley, guitarist Keith Glass’ own top of the line recording studio in Perth, Ontario. “Half the band was staying in my house,” explains Keith, “we’d just go up the street to the studio in the morning and do it when we felt like it. There were no real time restraints, and I think the results speaks to that.”
Visit Prairie Oyster on the web

Jason Roos

Raised in the small, rural town of Long Lake, Quebec outside of Mayo, Jason cut his teeth at a very young age to stars like Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Gene Watson, and Jonathan Edwards, just to name a few. Fascinated at a young age with southern music such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Allman Bros, however Jason was mostly drawn to hardcore traditional country. Jason was only 8 years old when he sang on stage for the first time, and yes, he sang a Merle Haggard song. The old classic “Wake Up” Obviously, Jason didn’t know what lay ahead. After quite a few years doing normal kid stuff, Jason asked to borrow his aunts guitar, and at 15, he was hooked. With his father showing him a couple of chords, Jason would not put the instrument down. Even watching his favorite TV shows, Jason had his guitar right beside him to pick up and play in between commercials. After learning some Neil Young tunes from ‘Austin City Limits’, Jason felt something was missing and quickly noticed that the songs he liked, Neil was playing harmonica. So, very quickly Jason started playing guitar & harp together. By 16, Jason was playing a regular weekend gig at a local club.

Jason started performing throughout Ottawa and surrounding areas for eight years honing his craft and paying his dues. During this time, in addition to club & concert dates, he has had numerous television appearances and won many talent contests that had made him a household name throughout the Ottawa Valley & Quebec. Jason obtained the highest marks in the history of CJOH’s Homegrown Café in early 1992. He was the CKBY Bud Country Talent Search winner for 1993, in which he went on to win the provincials in Hamilton during Country Music Week. Jason released his first single “Hell Is For Heroes” in early 1994 which recieved rave ratings on an international scale with a top 10 ranking on charts in Australia, and Denmark. In 1995, Jason was featured on CBC’s “Rita & Friends”.

After 8 years in the crazy music business world, Jason decided to take a break, get a day job, and start a family!
In August 1999 he married his long-time girlfriend Jennifer, and now has two beautiful children Wade (5) and Presley (3). It’s been ten years, and he’s back, better than ever, with a great selection of songs he’s been writing during his time off.

Printers Alley

This award-winning, hard working four-piece band from Kingston, Ontario was founded in 1991 and features four distinct voices, five instruments, and a broad repertoire of hits ranging from new top 40 country, to retro rock n’ roll (and just about everything in between) for the pleasure of listening and dancing audiences alike.

In 1995 and 1996, Printers Alley captured back to back championships in the Central Canadian Talent Search Finals beating out over 200 competitors from all across Canada. In 1999 they received three OCMA (Ontario Country Music Association) nominations, including: “Best Duo or Group” (along with, Lace, Leahy, Prairie Oyster, and Blue Rodeo); “Best Ontario Club Act”: and “Best Single” (Nowhere Fast). The nomination for “Best Ontario Club Act” was repeated in 2000.

Among their many accomplishments over the past decade Printers Alley have opened shows for, and shared the same stage with many well known artists such as: Prairie Oyster, Blue Rodeo, Kim Mitchell, David Lee Murphy, Brian White, Joe Diffie, Billy Ray Cyrus, Ricky Skaggs, Charlie Daniels, Wade Hayes, Stompin Tom Connors, Patricia Conroy, Jason McCoy, Paul Brandt, Terri Clarke, Neil McCoy, Tracy Byrd, Freddy Fender, Tracy Lawrence and Lonestar.

At the same time, the band’s continuous preparation, and spontaneous showmanship has been earning rave reviews from standing room only audiences at clubs, fairs, festivals, community and corporate events, weddings, and a host of parties and dances throughout Ontario and western Quebec.
